Govt urged to remove quarantine requirements, various import duties on leather

ISLAMABAD: Federation Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Ghazanfar Bilour has urged the government to remove various duties on the import of leather levied under different SROs and quarantine requirements on the import of raw hides and skins.

The FPCCI President was called upon by a delegation of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) led by its Chairman Amanullah Aftab. He was accompanied by Gulzar Firoz, Ejaz Bhomal, Aziz Ahmed, Shafi Ahmed and Imran Sheikh. The business leader and FPCCI former president SM Muneer, Senior Vice President Mazhar Ali Nasir and Vice President Tariq Haleem along with the Secretary-General Dr Iqbal Thaheem also attended the meeting.

The delegation apprised FPCCI President about the problems of leather sector in Pakistan. Bilour said that additional regulatory duty on import of various basic tanning chemicals and quarantine requirements imposed by the government is hampering the productivity of the leather sector which ultimately affects leather exports of the country.

Ghazanfar Bilour said that it is the leather sector is the 2nd largest in terms of exports. He added that the sector should be facilitated with subsidies in lab testing, matching grant for setting up effluent treatment plants, unilaterally slashing down rates of duty drawback on exports of finished leather goods and accelerating the process of releasing DDB, sales tax, income tax and DLTL claims.

The President further said that rather than providing facilities to the tanning industries the authorities are imposing duties and conditions which are creating problems.

SM Muneer said that the government should focus on export and take suitable measures to enhance exports. He said that despite the global recession and other domestic and international bottlenecks the tanning industry is actively engaged in export-oriented activities as a result thereof the exports of leather and leather products are gradually increasing.
