Younus Dagha to become next Secretary Finance

ISLAMABAD: As the present Finance Secretary Shahid Mehmood retires on January 6, the government has reportedly finalised the name of Muhammad Younus Dagha, as next finance secretary. Dagha is currently serving as Ministry of Commerce and Textile Industry Secretary.

According to reliable sources, the government, seeing the challenging financial situation of the country, has decided to transfer Dagha to the ministry of finance while someone else will replace him at the ministry of commerce.

Younus Dagha, considered as one of the most dynamic and active secretaries of BS-22, would now be given another challenging task of running the finance ministry, which is headed by an adviser, state minister and indirectly by a defunct federal minister.

Dagha, who after successfully handling the challenging post of secretary water and power, was given the ministry of commerce with a major task of improving the declining exports. Though there could be various reasons for improvement, however, one thing is clear that exports have started showing some positive figures after the involvement of Dagha, insiders claim.

Earlier, the secretary has also worked hard at the ministry of water and power (now two separate ministries of water resources and energy) to reduce load shedding by initiating power projects, installation of transmission lines and adopting renewable energy. Apart from handling the official work, Dagha has also been successful in dealing with both federal minister Khawaja Asif and state minister Abid Shair Ali at the ministry, sources added.

Finance Ministry will be the third major challenging post for Dagha that will test his abilities. Sources added that in the bureaucratic circles Dagha is known as a decision maker, hardworking and a ‘doer’.

According to sources, Dagha has reduced his activities at the ministry of commerce after he was consulted to assume charge of another ministry.

Currently, the ministry of finance faces major challenges such as the rising external debt, reducing remittances, a devalued currency and increasing imports resulting in ever-rising current account deficit etc. However, sources claim, that the secretary may better understand issues related to trade, exports, imports and finance as he has served the commerce division for over nine months.
