Digital finance can boost Pakistan GDP growth up to 7pc by 2025

ISLAMABAD: ACCA Pakistan hosted the Pakistan Leadership Conversation (PLC) 2018 in Islamabad on March 21, 2018. This will be followed by events in Karachi and Lahore on March 22 and 27 respectively. Pakistan Leadership Conversation is a critical forum for thought leaders to discuss important policy issues and in turn, develop an actionable agenda to drive economic growth.

This year the conversations in Islamabad were held around the theme, ‘Collective vision for an Emerging Pakistan’ and these conversations are aimed to shape the future of the society and economy in Pakistan.

Addressing the workshop, CEO Ignite, Yusuf Hussain, said that digital financing can boost the country’s GDP up to 7 per cent by 2025. At least 100 million account holders would be present by 2020 as an easier way of holding accounts through mobile banking and other advanced tools have rapidly increased the number of accounts. He said neglected segments of the society like women and farmers should also be encouraged and facilitated to have accounts. According to him, investors were now not taking much interest in a conventional business.

CEO CAMCO Ayla Majid, said that for going for a startup, people should seek unconventional financing. Only fancy data and presentations may not convince investors. The right team, good communication, and attractive ideas could lead to opening a startup.

CEO Naxis Nadeem A Malik said that the myth of unavailability of finance is not right. The real issue about financing a startup is about the trust level, scale in growth, and better idea.

JAZZ Head of Digital Payments Syed Jafar Shirazi, said his company has started the business in merchandise in 2009. The telecom company has achieved many successes in and is now looking to develop small loan programs for retailers. He said the ecommerce framework, on which the government is already working, is much needed to address issues related to regulation and legal matters. He said higher taxes on telecom sector was also an issue needed to be addressed by government.
