Pakistan to set up 100-acre ‘weaving city’

FAISALABAD: Pakistan’s first weaving city shall be set up in the M3 Industrial Estate here in Faisalabad as the country moves towards streamlining its textile sector, bringing the entire clutch of weaving units in one 100-acre parcel of land in this predominantly textile manufacturing city.

To this effect, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday between the Faisalabad Industrial Estate Development and Management Company (FIEDMC) and the All Pakistan Cotton Power Looms Association (APCPA) at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI).

Present at the ceremony were, apart from the leading lights of FCCI and industry stalwarts, Mian Adrees, the FIEDMC chairman, and Amir Saleemi, the CEO.

The FIEDMC’s leasing out of lands complete with pre-fabricated buildings will free up the finances of the power loom firms to invest in all around modernisation and refurbishment of the units.

The improved technology, said FCCI President Shabbir Hussain Chawla on the occasion, would help the power looms sector to produce export-quality clothes – attracting international buyers and increasing Pakistan’s exports.

The efforts to put up the proposed weaving city had been on the drawing board for several years, said APCPA’s Chaudhary Muhammad Nawaz.

In the extension phase, another 1,000 acres of land should be allotted to the M3 Industrial Estate, he emphasised.

The plans are, FIEDMC’s CEO Amir Saleemi revealed, to set up the smaller units on the bypasses of roads leading to Faisalabad – with the intent to provide jobs to the local workers. “The weaving city will be developed on the public-private partnership model,” said Saleemi.
