US launches probe into forced labour imports in 60 economies, including Pakistan
USTR investigation may lead to tariffs if countries fail to enforce bans on forced labour goods

The United States Trade Representative has launched investigations into alleged unfair trade practices in 60 economies, including Pakistan, focusing on whether governments have failed to enforce bans on imports produced through forced labour.
According to a statement issued by the USTR, the probe will examine whether countries have implemented and effectively enforced measures to prevent goods produced with forced labour from entering their markets.
The investigation covers several major US trading partners, including the European Union, China, Japan, India, Mexico, South Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
Officials said the inquiry could lead to trade penalties, including tariffs, if countries are found to have failed to enforce restrictions on such imports.
The move follows a push by the US administration to introduce new trade measures after certain duties were struck down by the US Supreme Court.
The US Trade Representative said governments around the world have not fully implemented or enforced bans on products linked to forced labour despite international commitments to address the issue.
He said the presence of forced labour in global supply chains creates cost advantages for foreign producers and affects competition for American workers and businesses.
The United States remains Pakistan’s largest export destination, and any new trade restrictions could create challenges for Pakistani exporters.
The development comes weeks after Pakistan and the United States discussed expanding economic cooperation during a meeting in Washington between the finance minister and the US commerce secretary.
