PM calls for immediate re-opening of Pak-Afghan border

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered for immediate re-opening of Pak-Afghan border on Monday, media sources have reported.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said that recent incidents of terrorism in Pakistan have been linked to anti-Pakistan elements in Afghanistan. However, the decision to re-open the border is being considered in the interest of the people and the economy at large and represents a goodwill gesture in the wake of long-standing religious, cultural and historical relations between the two countries.

Sharif further added that it is hoped that the Afghan Government would pay due consideration to the reasons for which the borders was closed. He further highlighted that peace in Afghanistan is crucial for peace and security in Pakistan.

Sharif favoured cooperation between the two countries to counter terrorism.

Pak-Afghan border crossings had been closed last month following a wave of terrorist activity in Pakistan and Pakistan blaming militants seeking shelter in Afghanistan.
