PTA issues 47 district-level internet licences to expand broadband

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued 47 district-level Class Licences for internet services so far in 2026, with Lahore securing the highest number of licences at seven, followed by Sargodha.

The issuance of  district-level Class Licences is part of PTA’s efforts to expand broadband infrastructure and improve digital connectivity across the country.

The telecom regulator granted its first district-level internet licence in February, followed by 12 licences in March, 14 in May, and a record 20 licences in June.

The PTA also issued four licences each in Faisalabad and Islamabad, besides granting licences for South Waziristan and Lower Chitral.

The regulator said the new licences are expected to enhance competition in the internet services market, improve last-mile connectivity, and expand broadband access in rural and underserved areas. The initiative is also aimed at encouraging local investment, creating employment opportunities, and supporting the growth of Pakistan's digital economy.

PTA began issuing district-level Class Licences at the start of 2026 to promote local entrepreneurship and increase broadband penetration nationwide.

Each licence is valid for 10 years. Applicants are required to pay a one-time licence fee of Rs300,000, along with a first-year annual fee of Rs100,000 before the licence becomes effective. The annual fee will increase by 10% each subsequent year.
