KP expects Rs79bn loans from international institutions

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is expected to receive loans and grants of over Rs79.69 billion for 65 development projects from international aid agencies in the financial year 2022-23.

The provincial government expects more than Rs13.49 billion in grants from international organizations. The highest loans of Rs41.53 billion is expected from the Asian Development Bank and Rs37.35 billion from the World Bank.

Funds could not be allocated for four foreign aid supported projects Home Department, Industry and Science and Information Technology and now these projects have been restricted to token amount only.

According to sources in planning and development department, the KP government is likely to receive Rs93.18 billion next year in the development program, of which Rs79.69 billion will be loans and Rs13.49 billion will be grants. The highest loan of Rs20.95 billion is expected for eight projects in the energy sector.

The two projects of Finance Department – Revenue Mobilization and Resource Management Program – are likely to receive more than Rs18.17 billion from the International Development Agency (IDA).

Similarly, Rs12.85 billion is expected for five road projects including Rs5.22 billion for rehabilitation of roads with the assistance of Asian Development Bank, Rs4.3 billion for Mardan-Swabi Road, Rs2 billion for Rural Roads Development Project from the World Bank. Rs1.5 billion for access roads while Rs100 million for the rehabilitation of flood-affected roads with the support of Japan government.

The multi-sector development sector will get Rs9.76 billion for 19 projects, of which Rs2.78 billion will in the form of loan and Rs6.97 billion as aid. The government is likely to get a loan of Rs6.87bn for two sports and tourism projects.

The provincial government will get Rs4.20 billion – Rs3.78 billion in loans and Rs411 million in aid – from international financial agencies for five projects in helped sector.

The agriculture sector is expects Rs3.98 billion – Rs3.594 billion will be loan and Rs386 million aid. The primary and secondary education sector expect Rs3.41 billion for four projects while the local government to get 3.18 billion from foreign institutions. Similarly, Rs700 million is expected for three drinking water projects and Rs300mn for forest projects.

Only token amount has been set aside for four projects of three administrative departments, including the e-governance program of Science and Information Technology board. Foreign aid agencies have pledged Rs4.62 billion for economic recovery, Rs718 million for energy and Rs600 million for enhancing the capacity institutions to implement rule of law.
