Punjab allocates Rs1.5 billion for kinnow orchard revival

Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo chaired a consultative session in Lahore to discuss strategies for improving kinnow yield and quality, according to a statement issued Tuesday.

The meeting brought together agricultural experts, kinnow orchard owners, exporters, and other stakeholders to formulate actionable plans for revitalizing the sector. Sahoo emphasized that the government would implement comprehensive measures to provide profitable opportunities for kinnow orchard owners while ensuring alignment with global standards.

In a significant move, Sahoo announced the establishment of a 'Centre of Excellence' in Sargodha for advanced kinnow research. He also revealed a Rs1.5 billion allocation for the revival of kinnow orchards, which cover over 317,000 acres in Punjab.

Specialized Citrus Research Centres will be set up in Toba Tek Singh and Layyah to address region-specific cultivation challenges and enhance research capacity. These initiatives aim to boost productivity and meet international market requirements.

Sahoo outlined plans to adopt a High-Efficiency Irrigation System for new kinnow orchards and establish nurseries to ensure farmers have access to high-quality, authentic plant varieties. The government also aims to reduce post-harvest losses and bring kinnow processing and packaging in line with international standards through modern technology.
