Govt launches commercial fruit tree plantation along highways

Private sector invited to lease land for climate-smart orchards under three-year model

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has launched a new initiative to commercially plant fruit trees along Pakistan’s motorways and highways, aiming to promote green growth, attract private investment, and advance the country’s climate goals.

In a high-level meeting held in Islamabad, Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik and Minister for Communications Aleem Khan finalized the framework for the project, which will enable private investors to lease land adjacent to highways for the cultivation of climate-appropriate fruit varieties.

According to an official press release, the program will follow a three-year lease model and is designed to both expand the nation’s green cover and create income-generating opportunities.

Dr. Musadik Malik highlighted that the collaboration with the private sector will play a crucial role in achieving Pakistan’s environmental targets. “This initiative not only enhances our ecological footprint but also opens up new economic avenues for sustainable development,” he said.

The Ministry of Climate Change will provide technical assistance to participating investors, including support in securing carbon credits to make the initiative financially attractive.

Officials noted that the project aligns with Pakistan’s broader climate strategy and is expected to serve as a replicable model for eco-friendly commercial ventures in the future.
