ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday announced the formation of a committee to review Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s share under the 2010 National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, with its first meeting scheduled for August.
Addressing a jirga on the security situation in KP, the prime minister acknowledged the demand raised by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, saying the time had come to revisit the NFC formula, particularly in relation to funds earmarked for the war on terror.
“The first clause of the NFC Award rightly recognised KP’s frontline role against terrorism,” Shehbaz said, noting that the province has received Rs700 billion so far under this arrangement.
He praised the people of KP as “brave and honourable,” lauding the dignity and sacrifices of the province’s tribal elders and residents. Calling KP “the most beautiful region in Pakistan,” he assured attendees of the centre’s continued support.
The jirga was attended by top civilian and military leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir, federal ministers, KP cabinet members and other senior officials.
In a wide-ranging address, the prime minister also revealed that Pakistan recently repelled a surprise attack from its eastern neighbour, referring to India. He recounted being alerted of the situation by the army chief at 2:30am and praised the swift and effective military response, stating: “India has received a lesson it will not forget.”
He added that friendly countries had conveyed satisfaction over Pakistan’s successful defense and said that the prayers of the people played a crucial role in the outcome.
Separately, PM Shehbaz assured that the issues of Balochistan would be resolved through amicable dialogue and understanding.
