ISLAMABAD:The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed hefty penalties amounting to Rs 1.93 billion on power distribution companies (DISCOs) across the country for fatal and non-fatal accidents occurring between 2018 and 2025.
According to official NEPRA documents, a total of Rs 635 million in fines was imposed for fatal incidents involving electricity distribution networks. Among these, Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) topped the list with fines totaling Rs 210 million.
Other major penalties were imposed on Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) with Rs 870 million, Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) with Rs 760 million, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) with Rs 750 million, and Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) with Rs 510 million. Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) and Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) were fined Rs 430 million each, while Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) faced Rs 410 million, and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) Rs 225 million.
For non-fatal incidents, NEPRA levied an additional Rs 330 million in fines. PESCO, FESCO, LESCO, GEPCO, MEPCO, SEPCO, and TESCO were fined Rs 10 million each, while HESCO faced a higher penalty of Rs 30 million, and QESCO Rs 20 million. The National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) was also penalized Rs 10 million for its role in fatal accidents.
In addition, K-Electric, the distribution company serving Karachi, was fined a staggering Rs 955 million for various fatal and non-fatal incidents over the same period.
It is pertinent to mention that NEPRA has imposed these penalties to ensure accountability and to push power utilities to improve safety standards, reduce accidents, and safeguard human lives.Â
