Two Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises, Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi, have formally rejected multi-million-dollar sponsorship offers from companies linked to gambling, citing ethical and social concerns, The News reported.
Despite the financial proposals surpassing those from traditional brands, both franchises chose to forgo short-term revenue to maintain credibility and social responsibility. Officials from the franchises confirmed that the matter was raised directly with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during internal PSL meetings, urging the board to lead a collective rejection of betting-linked sponsorships.
According to the report, a top franchise official said, “The other franchises were willing to follow suit if the PCB had taken a collective stance, but that did not happen.”
The PCB did not respond to recent queries regarding its position on betting sponsorships, though it has previously stated that all rights holders must operate within legal bounds.
Peshawar Zalmi Chairman Javed Afridi emphasised the franchise’s commitment to responsible partnerships. “For Zalmi, the priority has never been ‘easy money.’ We have chosen credible, socially responsible partners who add long-term value to our franchise,” he said.
Zalmi’s Marketing Director, Ahad, noted that the franchise has maintained a strict no-betting policy since its inception.
Islamabad United shared a similar stance. “Islamabad United has never partnered with any betting or surrogate companies, despite multiple offers over the years,” said the franchise’s Marketing Director, Rehan Ul Haq.
Both franchises’ decisions reflect a growing emphasis on ethical branding and socially responsible sponsorship within Pakistan’s professional sports sector.
