Pakistan launches naval mission to secure maritime trade routes, energy supplies

Pakistan has launched a naval mission to protect maritime trade and energy supplies as tensions in the Gulf region raise concerns about the safety of key shipping routes.

The Pakistan Navy announced the start of Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr, aimed at ensuring the safe movement of merchant vessels and safeguarding sea lines of communication in the Arabian Sea and surrounding waters.

The operation comes amid rising tensions linked to the Iran–US–Israel conflict, which has raised concerns about the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy transit corridor.

Pakistan relies heavily on maritime trade, with around 90% of the country’s trade conducted through sea routes. A large share of Pakistan’s oil imports also passes through the Strait of Hormuz before reaching domestic ports.

According to the military’s media wing, the naval mission is intended to protect national shipping and ensure the uninterrupted flow of essential commodities.

“In view of the evolving regional maritime security environment and potential disruptions to critical sea lanes, Pakistan Navy has launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to counter multidimensional threats to national shipping and maritime trade,” the statement said.

The navy said escort operations have begun for vessels operating under the Pakistan flag, in coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).

At present, navy ships are escorting two merchant vessels, one of which is scheduled to arrive in Karachi.

The navy said it is closely monitoring developments in regional waters and controlling merchant vessel movement to ensure safe passage through potentially vulnerable areas.

Recent tensions in the Gulf have increased concerns about shipping security, with reports that some international shipping companies are reviewing routes and insurance costs.
