Pakistan Railways recorded a surge in passenger revenue during the three days of Eid, generating over Rs480 million as increased travel demand coincided with recent fare adjustments, according to a news report.
Official data shows the department earned Rs110 million on the first day of Eid, Rs170 million on the second, and more than Rs200 million on the third day, marking one of the highest short-term revenue increases in recent years.
The upward trend continued beyond the holiday period, with total passenger revenue exceeding Rs1 billion over the past week, as the department seeks to improve its financial position amid rising operational costs.
The increase in earnings follows a fare revision implemented in March, when ticket prices were raised due to higher diesel costs linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions. The price adjustment, combined with Eid travel demand, contributed to higher receipts.
The railways minister said the growth in revenue reflects administrative measures and policy changes, adding that efforts are underway to improve services and operational efficiency.
Pakistan Railways has set a revenue target of over Rs100 billion for FY26, compared to an estimated Rs93 billion in FY25, with passenger services remaining a primary contributor. The department is also focusing on expanding freight operations to support long-term revenue stability.
Despite the increase in earnings, structural challenges persist due to ageing infrastructure, including outdated tracks and signalling systems that have contributed to delays and safety concerns.
To address these issues, the department has prioritised upgrades of major rail corridors, including the Karachi-to-Rohri track, which is planned for completion within three years.
Officials say improvements in infrastructure, combined with pricing and management measures, will be key to enhancing performance and ensuring long-term sustainability of the railways network.
