PM seeks agriculture sector input ahead of FY2026-27 budget, forms expert committee for reforms
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif consults farmers, dairy, livestock and seed stakeholders ahead of the FY2026-27 budget, endorsing reforms and a seed policy. He also orders an expert committee to propose modernization measures.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday engaged with leading stakeholders from Pakistan’s agriculture sector as part of consultations ahead of the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27, inviting proposals aimed at strengthening one of the country's most important economic sectors.
The meeting brought together representatives of farmers’ associations, dairy and livestock enterprises, seed companies, value-added agricultural industries, and both local and multinational firms operating in the sector. The consultation formed part of the government's broader pre-budget outreach to incorporate industry feedback into fiscal planning and policy formulation.
During the discussion, participants expressed support for the government's efforts to maintain economic stability and appreciated the prime minister's role in promoting peace amid the prevailing regional environment.
Stakeholders also welcomed the recently introduced seed policy and ongoing agricultural reforms, describing the measures as a significant step forward for the sector's development and productivity.
Addressing the participants, the prime minister said agriculture holds the potential to drive a major economic transformation and contribute substantially to Pakistan's long-term growth and recovery. He stressed the importance of increasing productivity through the adoption of modern technology and stronger integration between research institutions and farming communities.
Shehbaz highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, saying the initiative would help accelerate agricultural research, innovation, and knowledge transfer.
To further advance reforms and ensure sustainable growth in the sector, the prime minister directed the establishment of a committee comprising agricultural experts and stakeholders from across the country. The committee will be tasked with proposing measures to support modernization, improve policy implementation, and address challenges facing farmers and agribusinesses.
The consultation comes as the government finalizes preparations for the FY2026-27 budget, with agriculture expected to remain a central focus due to its role in employment generation, exports, and food security.
