ISLAMABAD: Indus Motor Company (IMC) which recalled over 9800 different models of Toyota Corolla for an issue with brakes, has cleared/repaired over 30 percent vehicles so far. The company had recalled different variants of its flagship model, Corolla 2016-17 over concerns of the vehicles experiencing the braking problems.
However, when contacted, IMC Chief Executive Officer Ali Asghar Jamali said that Corolla 2016-17 models of selected serial numbers were invited for inspection of under-torque of front calliper bolts, causing noise and over 30 per cent vehicles have so far been cleared after test. “There is not a major fault as it takes only two minutes to rectify the issue in a car,” he said adding that this was not an unusual move, since all prominent firms/ brand like Honda, Toyota, Suzuki etc. invite vehicles for tests.
In reply to a query, he said this was not the first time the IMC invited vehicles for test and inspection in Pakistan as the company has previously been considering issues/faults reported and covered under warranty.
This was special service campaign rather than a recall as only a nut was needed to be tightened in the affected cars. There was no need to replace anything in the cars, the CEO claimed.
“As good corporate practices, it is our responsibility to provide the customer world class luxury and comfort with the highest level of safety and quality,” he added.
Earlier it was reported that the problem had emerged in 7,892 units of XLI and GLI Corolla 1,300cc, 1,020 vehicles of 1,600cc Altis, and 984 units of 1,800cc Altis and Altis Grande of 2016-17 models all over the country. The cumulative figure of the recall based on serial numbers of these models comes to 9,896 units.
Last month, the company had advertised through local media that a selected number of Corolla vehicles “may experience braking problems due to under-torque of the front calliper bolts”.
Indus Motor also dispatched letters to the car owners titled, ‘Special Service Campaign, Free Inspection of Caliper Bolts’ in which the company also requested the customers to get their cars inspected.
It is a global norm and standard that vehicles are called for inspection or recalled if a malfunction is anticipated.
