Sialkot should become an SEZ, suggests SCCI President

Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) President Majid Raza Bhutta suggested on Tuesday that Sialkot Export Processing Zone (SEPZ) be granted the status of Special Economic Zone under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

In an interview with APP, Bhutta said the conversion of SEPZ into SEZ would enhance exports from the cities of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Gujrat. “The government should set up SEZ in Sialkot and Chinese investors should be encouraged to bring in their investment and technology,” he said. “Additionally, the government should identify high priority sectors for export and ensure concessions and incentives to encourage exports from respective sectors.” The SCCI president added that for the development of an export sector, it was imperative for the government to devise a sound sector-specific strategy and a vision with defined objectives.
