Misuse of green channel, cell phones worth millions recovered from Saddar market

KARACHI: Customs conducted a raid in Mobile Market, Saddar, Karachi and recovered cell phones and tablets worth millions of rupees that were got wrongly cleared by the importer though Green Channel facility by mis-declaration.

Model Customs Collectorate of Preventive Karachi received credible information that some importers are involved in misusing the facility of Green Channel under WeBOC system and clearing their goods from Karachi by grossly mis-declaring description as LED lights/bulbs.

In wake of the said information and on the directives of the Customs (Enforcement) South Karachi Chief Collector, Customs (Preventive) Karachi Collector constituted a team under the supervision of ADC/DC (ASO) to thwart such attempts.

The team after strict vigilance successfully intercepted a 40-feet container No. KKFU-725557-3 loaded on a trawler No. TLT-374 near Central Plaza, Mobile Market, Saddar, Karachi in the wee hours of November 01 2017.

On spot questioning confirmed the information that huge quantity of mobile phones in the container was brought into the country without payment of leviable duty/taxes.

In absence of any proof of legal import thereof the said container, laden on a vehicle, was escorted to ASO (HQ) at NMB Wharf, Karachi for further investigation and stocktaking.

As a result, the huge quantity of goods, valuing Rs 284 million (approx) were recovered and seized.

The seized goods included:

(1) Q-Mobile quantity 27,200 value amount to Rs. 136,000,000

(2) Assorted Mobile quantity 35,790 value amount to Rs 143,160,000

(3) Amazon Tablets quantity 531 value amount to Rs 5,310,000

A total tentative value of Rs 284,470,000.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that said goods were imported by M/s. Digicom Trading Pvt Ltd GD No. KAPW-HC-73036 mis-declared as LED lights/bulbs and was cleared through the system under Green Channel.

FIR No. 226/2017 ASO of the case has been lodged and further investigations are underway.
