ISLAMABAD: In a drive against counterfeiting and piracy, Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan), in collaboration with the law enforcement agencies, would act against those involved in the illegal practices.
During meeting of 11th Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Enforcement Coordination Committee on Wednesday, IPO Pakistan resolved that the issue of counterfeiting and piracy would be dealt relentlessly and all-out efforts would be made for the development of genuine businesses in the country.
The meeting, chaired by IPO-Pakistan Chairman Mujeeb Ahmed Khan, was also attended by IPO-Pakistan Director General Irfan Tarar and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) DG Sohail Asif.
Addressing the meeting, Mujeeb Ahmed Khan termed counterfeiting and piracy a crime against innovation and creativity. He stressed the need to develop close coordination between IPO-Pakistan and concerned LEAs to address issues related to piracy and counterfeiting.
The meeting was informed that IP Tribunals were fully functional while anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting cells had been established at the offices of IPO-Pakistan for coordination with LEAs.
It was decided that capacity building programmes of LEAs and awareness activities for business community would be conducted in different parts of the country in order to ensure effective IPR enforcement and genuine business development.
Earlier, IPO-Pakistan Director (Enforcement) Muhammad Ismail gave a detailed presentation over the enforcement of IPRs in the country. He apprised the committee about Pakistan’s improving IP image among the comity of nations during last few years.
