Toyota to recall cars in China over airbag defects

BEIJING: Japanese automaker Toyota will recall 357 imported Lexus cars in China due to defective airbags, according to China’s market regulator.

The recall, starting from Oct 11, was filed by Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co, and will involve 357 imported Lexus SC430 vehicles manufactured between May 23, 2005 and Jan 19, 2010, the State Administration of Market Regulation said in a statement.

The front passenger airbags, produced by Japanese manufacturer Takata, have defective inflators that could fracture and send potentially fatal shrapnel into passengers when airbags are activated, posing safety risks, the administration said.

The company will replace the defective airbags free of charge.
