Car sales plunge 43pc in eight months

ISLAMABAD: The sale and production of cars dipped by 43.37pc and 45.83pc, respectively, during the first eight months of the current financial year (2019-20) as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

According to Pakistan Automobile Manufacturing Association (PAMA), as many as 79,537 cars were sold during the period under review as compared 140,462 units sold in 8MFY19, adding that the production of cars fell from 151,753 units last year to 82,196 units.

The sale of Honda cars took the worst beating during the period under review, as they went down by 62.91pc (from 28,760 units last year to 10,665 units)

Among the variants, the sale of Suzuki Swift dipped by 54.52pc, from 3,224 units to 1,466 units, while that of Toyota Corolla went down from 38,248 units to 18,902 units, showing a decrease of 50.58pc.

Suzuki Cultus witnessed a 33.4pc reduction in sales, going down from 14,785 units to 9,845 units. The sale of Suzuki Wagon-R also saw a sharp decline of 73.34pc, from 21,600 units last year to 5,812 units during the period under review.

Meanwhile, the sale of Suzuki Mehran, production of which was suspended by Pak Suzuki, recorded its sales at 1,702 units for July-Feb FY20, as against 22,460 units sold last year.

The sale of Suzuki Bolan declined by 64.22pc, from 11,385 units to 4,073 units.

On the other hand, the production of Suzuki Cultus decreased from 16,097 units to 9,222 units, witnessing decrease of 42.70pc, while that of Suzuki Wagon-R declined 70.67pc, from 23,672 units to 6,941 units.

Moreover, the production of Suzuki Bolan plunged 66.54pc, from 12,126 units to 4,057 units during 8MFY20.
