ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday appointed Nausheen Javaid Amjad, a senior officer of Inland Revenue Service (IRS), as the chairperson of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
When two months ago, Shabbar Zaidi went on an indefinite leave, Nausheen became the acting chairperson of FBR. The selection committee had unanimously recommended that Nausheen should be appointed as the FBR chief.
On Friday, the prime minister, in his capacity as the minister in-charge of Establishment Division, had placed the summary before the federal cabinet for appointing Nausheen as the chairperson and terminating the contract of Zaidi.
Officials stated that the most gigantic task for the chairperson would be revenue collection as the tax department is currently facing a whooping revenue shortage due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to this, FBR had also failed to submit the reform agenda to the PM Secretariat which was due for submission during the first week of March, they added.
They also said a chairperson would have to make wise decisions regarding customs operations as well as on policy matters. Presently, there is massive corruption in Pakistan Customs and the Customs Intelligence DG had also given report about the alleged corruption committed by customs officials. Although the government had removed the officials, FIA has yet to submit its investigative report on this matter, they added.
Sources informed Pakistan Today that Haroon Akhtar’s name was also proposed for making him the special assistant to prime minister on revenue due to his close affiliation with PTI members. Sources added that he also tried to grab the FBR chairman slot but the federal cabinet rejected his ascent to these positions.
Bad decision. Should have hired young dynamic chartered Accountant.
