PESHAWAR: The ongoing Covid-19 crisis in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has adversely affected the workforce employed in various sectors as the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) in cooperation with provincial Planning and Development Department has assessed that around 2.71 million workers have become vulnerable due to the outbreak.
The joint study also assesses various vulnerable sections of employment affected from the covid-19 pandemic.
Most of the workforce has been affected in the construction, retail and wholesale and hotel industries.
The study identifies workers into five various sections, which are contributing family workers, own account workers, casual paid employees, paid worker by piece rate, and non-family apprentices.
Among various sectors, workers in the construction sector were found the most vulnerable, where 92 per cent of workers (812,766 out of 885,174) were found vulnerable. Wholesale and retail trade and hotels were ranked second in term of vulnerable workers, where 78pc (840,486 out of 1.75 million) of the workers were found vulnerable.
The study declares 76pc of workers in transport and communication sector vulnerable, where 424,918 out of 558,919 workers were found vulnerable.
Similarly, 72pc workers in manufacturing; 37pc in financing and insurance; 45pc in mining; 14pc in social services; and 13pc in electricity, gas and water sector were found vulnerable.
The study further says 710,000 daily wagers are employed in the construction sector; 87,000 people work in the manufacturing sector; 60,000 in the transport and communication sector; while 51,000 are employed in the wholesale and retail sector.
