3G users in Pakistan increasingly moving towards 4G as total subscriber base reaches 82.76m

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued telecom data for July 2020 and also updated telecom indicators on its website till end of July 2020, showing an increase of 1.62 million 3G and 4G subscribers, from June 2020. The total number of 3G and 4G subscribers has reached 82.76 million in Pakistan by July end, as compared to 81.14 million by June end.

Total number of mobile phone users has also shown increase from 167.27 million in June to 168.04 million by the end of July, while Monthly Next Generation Mobile Service (NGMS) penetration also showed a slight increase, reaching 39.25 percent in July from 38.25 percent in June. Teledensity for cellular mobile also showed an increase from 78.84 percent in June to 79.81 percent. The broadband subscribers went up from 83.17 million in June 2020 to 84.82 million in July.

As for market share of telecom companies, Jazz continues to lead the market with 37.6 percent share, followed by Telenor at 27.3 percent, Zong at 21.89 percent and Ufone falling last with 13.21 percent.

In terms of customers of different telecom companies individually, PTA data shows that Jazz has 10.480 million 3G users by July end, which is slightly lower than the company’s June figure of 10.817 million customers by June end June. However, 4G customers of Jazz showed a small increase from 19.062 million to 19.982 million from June to July.

Telenor also lost its 3G customers; from 6.943 million in June to 6.790 million in July, while 4G customers grew from 10.925 million to 11.583 million in July 2020.

Zong followed suit whereby its 3G customers fell from 6.535 million in June to 6.314 million in July, and 4G customers went up from 17.507 million in June to 18.131 million in July 2020.

Ufone 3G users decreased from 5.469 million 5.258 million by July end, and its 4G customers increased from 3.881 million by June end to 4.221 million by July end.

PTA also released complaints data, showing that the authority received 9,735 complaints from telecom consumers against different telecom operators including (cellular operators, the PTCL, LDIs, WLL operators, and ISPs) as of July 2020. Almost 98 percent of these complaints were resolved, PTA said. However, Most of the complaints received by PTA were regarding cellular mobile services.

PTA also received 202 complaints against basic telephony where 190 were addressed during July 2020. While 929 complaints were received against the ISPs where 864 were addressed.

Individually, Zong customers made the most complaints (3,235) followed by Jazz (2,646). Complaints received from Telenor customers stood at third highest (1,543) while Ufone customers made the fewest number of complaints (1,140).
