Finance supplementary, SBP amendment bills deferred again

Session was held for only 12 minutes

The National Assembly (NA) session was adjourned on Friday for an indefinite period, deferring the approval of the Finance Supplementary Bill, 2021 and State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill, 2021, once again.

“The National Assembly session has been prorogued,” the official Twitter handle of the NA said.

According to local media reports, the session which commenced with Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri in chair was held for a mere 12 minutes.

Earlier on Thursday, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin had presented the two bills in NA; however, the the session was adjourned till Friday after the opposition pointed out the lack of quorum in the House.

While addressing a press conference following the NA session on Thursday, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin said that tax exemptions worth Rs343 billion out of Rs700 billion recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) given to various sectors will be withdrawn under the supplementary bill.

Tarin dismissed fears of inflation claiming that there is no such thing as a storm of inflation hitting the masses by taking these measures.

“The common man will have to bear a burden of only Rs2 billion,” he had said, adding that items which will affect the common man only include personal computers, sewing machines, matches, iodised salt and red pepper.
