The federal government has instructed the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco) to accelerate the sale of its wheat stock before the arrival of the new crop, aiming to stabilise the market and avoid financial losses.
Chairing a high-level meeting at Passco headquarters in Lahore, Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain stressed the urgent need for timely wheat disposal to maintain national food security and prevent storage-related losses.
Passco officials briefed the minister on the current wheat stock position, reporting that as of March 6, the organisation held 2.47 million tonnes after selling 578,934 tonnes from April 2024 to March 2025. The agency had also procured 1.79 million tonnes during the 2024 wheat season.
Officials assured the minister that Passco is fulfilling its role in food security and market stabilisation while ensuring transparency in wheat sales. They highlighted enhanced coordination with provincial authorities to streamline transactions and speed up the process.
Minister Hussain warned against delays, emphasising that prolonged storage could affect wheat quality and lead to financial losses. He reiterated the government’s commitment to agricultural development and ensuring fair returns for farmers, urging swift action to prevent potential market disruptions.
