The federal government has approved the “New Gwadar Shipyard Mega Project” and activated the Project Management Cell (PMC) following instructions from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to a report published by Business Recorder citing official sources from the Gwadar Port Authority, an allocation of Rs200 million has been made for the PMC’s establishment, with appointments to be made as per standard operating procedures.
The New Gwadar Shipyard Mega Project aims to promote commercial shipbuilding and repair, generate employment, and contribute to economic growth. It is part of the broader plan to advance Gwadar Port’s development under the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The GPA has earmarked 750 acres for the shipyard, which will provide dry docking services for cargo ships and facilitate shipbuilding operations. With the land dispute nearing resolution, the sources said terms of reference would soon be finalised, and international tenders would be invited for the project.
In January, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the relevant ministries to shift 60% of the public sector imports and exports to the Gwadar Port.
