EU Commission President urges China to address U.S. tariff impact

During a call with Premier Li Qiang, von der Leyen emphasizes Europe and China’s responsibility to support a fair, reformed trading system

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on China to help find a negotiated solution to the trade challenges stemming from the import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

During a phone call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, von der Leyen emphasized the joint responsibility of Europe and China—two of the world’s largest markets—to support a strong, reformed trading system that is free, fair, and based on a level playing field.

The two leaders also discussed establishing a mechanism to monitor potential trade diversion, with the EU concerned that China may reroute inexpensive exports from the U.S. to Europe as a result of the tariffs.
