The European Union is finalizing its list of U.S. goods targeted for tariff retaliation in response to the Trump administration’s duties on steel, aluminum, and automotive products.
Initially estimated at around 26 billion euros ($28.46 billion), the value of the countermeasures will ultimately fall below that figure, according to EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic. “We are finalizing the list tonight, but I can tell you it will not reach the full 26 billion euros, as we have taken into account feedback from our member states,” Sefcovic told reporters on Monday.
The EU faces 25% tariffs on exports of steel, aluminum, and cars under the U.S. trade measures. Sefcovic emphasized that the EU aims to ensure the retaliatory burden is shared fairly among its 27 member states.
Earlier in the day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks with metals industry representatives and was scheduled to consult with the automobile sector later, as Brussels works to shape its final response.
The completed list of targeted U.S. products is expected to be announced soon.
