Imports from North America into Pakistan rise 27.39% to $1.902 billion in 9MFY25, up from $1.493 billion a year earlier

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s merchandise exports to North America rose 11.24% to $4.837 billion during the first nine months of FY2024-25, up from $4.348 billion in the same period last year, driven largely by increased textile and clothing shipments to the United States.

The U.S. accounted for nearly 94% of Pakistan’s total exports to North America, with the remaining directed mainly to Canada. Exports to the U.S. rose 12.08% year-on-year to $4.543 billion in 9MFY25, compared to $4.053 billion in the corresponding period of FY24, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.

This uptick comes after exports to the region had declined to $5.432 billion in FY24 from $5.17 billion in FY23, following a sharp 23.28% drop from $6.74 billion in FY22. The current rebound is attributed to improved demand for Pakistani textiles in the U.S., amid reduced exports from regional competitors such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.

Despite the overall growth, Pakistan’s exports to Canada fell marginally by 0.26% to $293.69 million in 9MFY25 from $294.47 million in the same period last year. Full-year exports to Canada dropped 8.77% to $389.16 million in FY24 from $426.57 million in FY23.

Meanwhile, the United States has announced a 90-day moratorium on implementing a new 29% tariff on Pakistani goods, mainly targeting the textile sector, under a decision made by the Trump administration.

Imports from North America into Pakistan rose 27.39% to $1.902 billion in 9MFY25, up from $1.493 billion a year earlier.

Pakistan’s exports to Latin America also saw growth, reaching $58.55 million in 9MFY25 from $49.69 million in the same period last year—an increase of 17.82%. For the full FY24, exports to the region stood at $77.82 million, up 46.59% from $53.08 million in FY23.

In contrast, exports to Central America dropped 3.47% to $124.97 million in 9MFY25 from $129.47 million a year earlier. Mexico, Pakistan’s top export market in Central America, recorded a 2.96% decline in imports from Pakistan, falling to $95.74 million from $98.67 million.
