The Japanese government has approved a grant of $3.5 million to support the installation of smart water meters and related equipment for the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) in Faisalabad.Â
The agreement was signed in Islamabad on Wednesday between the Embassy of Japan and the Economic Affairs Division under the Economic and Social Development Programme.
This initiative aims to help Faisalabad Wasa move from a flat rate water billing system to a metered system, where charges are based on actual water consumption.Â
The programme will supply 8,400 smart water meters, enabling improved water revenue collection, an efficient billing process, and better water distribution management. It also supports the digital transformation of Faisalabad’s water supply network.
Faisalabad, Pakistan’s third-largest city, currently faces water supply challenges, with residents receiving water for only about six hours a day. The flat rate tariff system has contributed to water wastage and limited revenue generation, restricting Wasa’s capacity to upgrade or expand its infrastructure.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Japanese Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi expressed hope that this grant would enhance water supply services in Faisalabad, leading to improved public health and living conditions. He reaffirmed Japan’s continued cooperation with Pakistan in the water sector.
Naoaki Miyata, Chief Representative of JICA Pakistan, highlighted that smart water meters will drive digital transformation and enhance water services in the city. The grant aid reflects Japan and JICA’s commitment to ensuring safe and efficient water supply in Pakistan.
