ISLAMABAD: Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain held a meeting with a delegation of the Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA) to discuss key issues related to the wheat sector.
The delegation requested permission for import-cum-export of wheat products to enhance industrial activity, maintain supply chains, and boost foreign exchange reserves.
The minister assured the delegation that the government is considering their request.
He stated that enabling import-cum-export of wheat-based products can support the local flour milling industry, access international markets, and generate foreign exchange.
The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to responsible trade policies that support the economy without compromising domestic food security.
Rana Tanveer Hussain addressed concerns about the release of strategic wheat reserves, clarifying that reserves maintained by the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) are for emergency use only and will not be released into the open market.
He said PASSCO’s reserves are part of the national food security strategy and will be used only in times of need.
The meeting ended with an agreement to maintain ongoing dialogue for the development of the flour milling sector and the goals of national food security and economic growth.
