Alibaba launches Qwen3-Coder open-source AI coding model

Qwen3-Coder is built to handle software development tasks such as code generation and managing complex coding workflows

Alibaba Group has launched Qwen3-Coder, an open-source artificial intelligence model designed for software development, calling it its most advanced coding tool to date.

The announcement was made on Wednesday as Chinese tech companies continue to compete in the global AI race.

Qwen3-Coder is built to handle software development tasks such as code generation and managing complex coding workflows. Alibaba said the model is especially effective in agentic AI coding tasks, where AI systems perform programming tasks independently.

According to Alibaba, Qwen3-Coder performed better than domestic rivals, including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI’s K2, in key areas related to coding. The company also said that the model matched the performance of U.S. models such as Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s GPT-4 in certain capabilities.
