Ahsan Iqbal calls for export-led growth, value addition at Gulfood 2026

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday underscored the importance of value addition and export expansion to achieve economic self-reliance, reiterating that export-led growth remains central to the government’s Uraan Pakistan strategy.

During his visit to the Pakistan Pavilion at Gulfood 2026, the minister interacted with Pakistani exporters from various food and agro-based sectors and urged them to focus on improving product quality, enhancing standards and shifting towards value-added offerings to compete in international markets.

“We are committed to promoting productivity, quality and innovation so that Made in Pakistan becomes a recognised global brand and our products find space on shelves across international markets,” he said while addressing exhibitors.

Ahsan Iqbal toured multiple stalls at the pavilion and expressed satisfaction over Pakistan’s strong presence at the global food exhibition. He appreciated the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and Pakistan’s mission in Dubai for organising what he described as a vibrant and well-represented pavilion.

He said platforms such as Gulfood provided critical opportunities for market access, branding and building long-term business partnerships, noting the large participation of Pakistani companies at the event.

Highlighting the broader policy direction, the minister said expanding exports was the top national priority under Uraan Pakistan, aimed at placing the economy on a sustainable growth path and reducing dependence on external borrowing.

“If Pakistan is to permanently move away from reliance on the IMF and foreign debt, the only viable path is the promotion and expansion of exports,” he said, adding that it was encouraging to see local firms increasingly focusing on value-added products.

During the visit, the minister also stopped at the Biryani Festival stall set up by TDAP and commended the initiative to promote Pakistani basmati rice and cuisine as part of soft branding and agri-exports promotion.

TDAP Director General (Agro Division) Athar Hussain Khokhar and Trade and Investment Counsellor Ali Zeb Khan briefed the minister on pavilion arrangements and participation details.

The event was also attended by Pakistan Business Council Dubai Chairman Shabbir Merchant, Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan Chairman Faisal Jehangir Malik and other members of the business community.
