Govt raises diesel price by Rs11.30 per litre for next fortnight

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Friday increased the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs11.30 per litre for the next fortnight, raising concerns over higher transport and food costs, while keeping petrol prices unchanged.

According to an official notification, the revised petroleum prices will take effect from February 1, 2026, following recommendations from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). The new price of high-speed diesel has been set at Rs268.38 per litre, up from Rs257.08.

Diesel is a key fuel for heavy transport, agricultural machinery, railways, and power generators, and any increase typically feeds into inflation through higher freight and logistics costs. Market participants expect the hike to exert upward pressure on food prices and essential commodities in the coming weeks.

In contrast, the government maintained the price of motor spirit (petrol) at Rs253.17 per litre. Petrol is largely used in private vehicles and motorcycles, providing some relief to urban commuters and middle-income households.

The selective adjustment—raising diesel prices while holding petrol steady—is likely to draw criticism from transporters and the agriculture sector, particularly during winter months when operating costs remain elevated.

The revised prices will remain in force until the next scheduled fortnightly review.
