World Bank backs Punjab’s affordable housing, climate resilience initiatives
Ajay Banga meets CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif to discuss continued support and joint projects in key sectors

World Bank President Ajay Banga, leading a high-level delegation, met with Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif to reaffirm the bank’s ongoing support for climate resilience, digital governance, and inclusive development in the province.
During the meeting, Banga and the Chief Minister discussed enhancing cooperation across key sectors including health, education, affordable housing, climate resilience, and various ongoing welfare programs. The meeting also reviewed current World Bank-supported initiatives in Punjab and focused on strengthening the partnership between the Punjab government and the bank.
Banga commended Punjab’s welfare initiatives, particularly the ongoing projects in tourism, education, health, and skills development. He expressed appreciation for the provincial government's commitment to addressing critical issues such as climate change and public welfare.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted that health and education continue to be top priorities for the provincial government, with substantial investments being made to strengthen these sectors. She emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation with the World Bank, particularly in fostering financial stability and developing viable business models.
The Chief Minister also pointed to the “Connected Punjab Programme,” which is being developed with World Bank support, as a key step in improving the province’s IT infrastructure. She noted that this initiative, along with other projects aimed at digital payments and governance, would stimulate economic growth and enhance transparency.
Further, Maryam Nawaz Sharif showcased several initiatives, including the Nawaz Sharif IT City, global IT certifications, and e-procurement systems, which are improving governance. The CM also mentioned improvements in the irrigation system, affordable housing programs like "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar," and social welfare schemes such as the Nigehban Package and Himmat Card aimed at supporting underserved communities.
The meeting underscored the continued commitment of both parties to advancing key reforms and development goals for the province of Punjab.
