Govt weighs online classes, remote work to conserve energy amid Middle East crisis

The federal government is considering introducing online classes, remote work and reduced office attendance under a proposed national action plan aimed at conserving energy as tensions in the Middle East threaten global energy supplies, Geo News reported, citing sources familiar with the official discussions.

The measures are being evaluated as part of contingency planning in response to potential disruptions in oil and gas flows from the Gulf region. The proposals could take effect from March 2026 if approved.

Officials said educational institutions may shift some classes to online platforms to reduce energy consumption and limit physical attendance on campuses.

The corporate sector is also examining options for remote work. Companies in sectors such as information technology and telecommunications are reportedly considering allowing employees to work from home for up to two days a week.

Government offices may adopt a hybrid arrangement in which only essential staff remain physically present while others work remotely.

Additional proposals under review include shared transportation arrangements for office employees and the expansion of online services to reduce physical visits to government offices.

Officials said the measures aim to reduce energy use while maintaining operational continuity across both public and private sectors. Similar arrangements were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to support remote work and digital education.
