Port Qasim cargo rises 8.2% to 36.5 million tonnes despite fewer ships

The Pakistan Ports Authority reported an 8.2% increase in cargo throughput at Port Qasim during July–March FY2025-26, with total handling rising to 36.548 million tonnes from 33.768 million tonnes in the same period last year.

The increase came despite a decline in vessel calls, which fell by 1.3% to 1,161 ships compared to 1,176 in the corresponding period, indicating higher cargo volumes per vessel.

Among terminals, Pakistan International Bulk Terminal recorded a rise in throughput to 5.430 million tonnes from 3.533 million tonnes, while Huaneng Fuyun Port & Shipping handled 1.203 million tonnes, up from 0.803 million tonnes. Fauji Akbar Portia Marine Terminal and Engro Vopak Terminal also reported higher volumes.

In contrast, Engro Elengy Terminal and Pakistan Gas Port LNG Terminal posted slight declines in cargo handling, reflecting variations across segments.

Container operations remained stable, with Qasim International Container Terminal handling around 0.75 million TEUs during the period.

Officials said the overall performance reflects improved operational efficiency, with terminals handling larger consignments per vessel. They added that ongoing tensions in the Middle East contributed to increased cargo volumes in some segments due to rerouting of trade and higher shipment sizes.

Monthly data showed cargo handling easing slightly to 3.629 million tonnes from 3.676 million tonnes, while vessel calls declined to 107 from 122.

Despite the monthly drop, certain terminals recorded gains, with Pakistan International Bulk Terminal handling 0.623 million tonnes from 12 ships and Fauji Oil Terminal managing 0.596 million tonnes from 14 vessels.

The authority said port operations remained stable, although petroleum and container cargo volumes showed fluctuations due to changes in shipping routes and schedules.
