PM orders expedited work on new fertilizer plants, explores import options from Central Asia

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to expedite work on establishing new fertilizer production plants and explore alternative sources of fertilizer from Central Asian countries as part of efforts to strengthen domestic supply and safeguard food security.

Chairing a high-level meeting on food security and fertilizer availability, the prime minister said ensuring uninterrupted supply to farmers remains a top government priority, according to an official statement.

The meeting was briefed that natural gas supply to local fertilizer manufacturing units is continuing without disruption, aligned with national demand requirements. Officials also confirmed that sufficient stocks are available to meet the requirements of Kharif crops.

Sharif instructed that fertilizer supply to farmers must be ensured under all circumstances, particularly during critical agricultural cycles, and stressed the need to maintain adequate reserves for both Kharif and Rabi seasons.

In view of potential disruptions to supply chains from Gulf countries, the prime minister directed authorities to prepare alternative sourcing plans, including imports from Central Asian states.

He further emphasized that the agricultural sector’s needs must be fully protected to ensure food security across the country.

The prime minister also ordered continuous monitoring of fertilizer distribution and directed strict action against hoarding and artificial shortages, warning against any attempts to distort market supply.
