British High Commissioner Jane Marriott met Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik to review progress on the £35 million Green Compact, a bilateral climate cooperation framework aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s resilience to climate change.
According to an official statement, Marriott presented the Green Compact Action Plan and briefed the minister on its priorities and proposed areas of cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, Dr Musadik Malik stressed that the Green Compact should focus on initiatives that deliver practical and measurable benefits for people across Pakistan.
The minister also shared updates on plans to establish a Green University in Islamabad. He informed the British high commissioner about ongoing discussions with international partners, including Italy and stakeholders associated with the Arctic Circle initiative, regarding the project.
Malik further highlighted the creation of a Green Tech Hub at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. The hub is intended to support young entrepreneurs developing green technologies and sustainable business solutions.
He said it was important to create opportunities for young people not only in green entrepreneurship but also in research and innovation that could produce scalable solutions to environmental and climate-related challenges.
Marriott briefed the minister on the United Kingdom’s youth entrepreneurship programmes and climate-related projects being implemented in Pakistan through collaboration with the British High Commission. These initiatives are focused on promoting climate resilience and supporting green solutions.
The two sides also discussed measures to strengthen early warning systems and improve preparedness for climate-related disasters.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing cooperation under the Green Compact framework and pursuing initiatives aimed at supporting communities vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
