Internet services restored across Pakistan after SMW5 submarine cable fault rectified, PTA says
Regulator says SEA-ME-WE 5 cable is fully operational, with traffic rerouted through alternate links during repair work

Internet services across Pakistan returned to normal on Friday after a fault in the SEA-ME-WE 5 (SMW5) international submarine cable system was fully rectified, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Friday.
The PTA said the SMW5 international submarine cable is now fully operational following the successful rectification of the fault that had caused intermittent internet service degradation for some users.
According to the PTA, restoration of the submarine cable has normalised internet services across the country, ending the disruption that had affected segments of Pakistan’s international internet traffic.
The authority said it remained in close coordination with Transworld Associates (TWA) throughout the restoration process to ensure the issue was resolved as quickly as possible.
PTA said internet traffic was rerouted through alternate international links during the repair work to minimise the impact on users and maintain service continuity to the maximum extent possible.
The telecom regulator said these contingency measures helped reduce the effects of the cable fault while restoration efforts were underway.
PTA further said it would continue to closely monitor the resilience and performance of Pakistan’s international connectivity infrastructure to ensure the reliable, secure and uninterrupted provision of telecommunications and broadband services across the country.
The restoration comes a day after PTA informed the public that some internet users could experience intermittent service degradation due to the fault in the SMW5 submarine cable system, while assuring that alternative routes had been activated to minimise disruption.
