As blackouts persist, solar energy entities see investment opportunities in Pakistan

Solar & Battery System Operations can sell excess energy to a disconnected grid

LAHORE: Florida based energy solutions company, SkyElectric, has introduced an intelligent solar and battery system designed for Pakistan’s erratic grid. While most international solutions come with an assumption of a continuously operating grid, SkyElectric’s product can supply energy to a disconnected grid and provide power to homes and businesses without the need of a switch from grid to solar power.

This intelligent solution was introduced by the company at its new Solar and Technical Education Centre for the public established at Packages Mall, Lahore. CEO and Executive Chairman of SkyElectric, Ashar Aziz, in his presentation at the event said, “One million houses with efficient solar power solution in Pakistan can reduce 20-30 percent load from the national power grid, which can be provided to industries and commercial users.”

He recommended that the government should further reduce import duties and taxes on solar power panels and batteries which will greatly promote use of solar power solutions at domestic level resulting in uninterrupted power supply to domestic consumers. Electric utilities should make it easier to export excess solar energy back to the main grid by simplifying the process of acquiring net-metering licenses. Aziz noted that his company also offers assistance and guidance to customers in procurement of these licenses which can otherwise be a tedious task.

He added that the difficulties in getting such licenses are one of the two factors hindering the growth of solar power usage. The other being lack of knowledge and understanding that despite seeming a huge investment at the time of installation, solar power systems can prove to be much more cost efficient in the long run. He said that it can also become a source of income by selling surplus solar power to the national grid by connecting with DISCO network through smart meters.

The Solar Power Sales and Technical Education Centre also allows visitors to get detailed insights about powering their homes and businesses with smart solar and battery technology. The systems introduced by the company combine solar energy with advanced lithium-ion battery technology, energy intelligence, and 24/7 remote monitoring and fault correction through a Network Operation Center (NOC), all to power homes and businesses with an uninterrupted power supply.

The CEO said that this system helps reduce the heavy burdens of increasing energy demands on Pakistan, allowing room and opportunity to build a parallel, clean and efficient energy infrastructure. A help center is also established to assist users in case of a breakdown where technical specialists are appointed to solve the halts if any. The systems themselves come with a warranty of four years and more guarantees beyond that time.

The event consisted of two parts, a presentation for media, government, and energy sector; followed by another presentation for corporate executives, homeowners, academia, green architects and builders.
