Businessmen urge political parties to sign Charter of Economy

KARACHI: Senior businessmen, including members of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), have urged the political leadership to sign a Charter of Economy (CoE) in order to meet national economic targets.

The Businessmen Panel (BMP) of the FPCCI’s Chairman, Mian Anjum Nisar in a statement on Sunday emphasised that all the political parties contesting the forthcoming general elections must immediately share their respective economic programmes with the masses in general and business community in particular.

Mentioning that not much time is left for the next elections, he said the parties besides sharing their programmes must also sign a charter of the economy so that no pressure may every compel them to make any compromise, detrimental to the economy.

The economic plans essentially needed to be presented by all the political parties must, in a nutshell, be the economic layout they perceive for the country and which they may follow for the long-term sustainability of the country, said the BMP chairman.

Mian Anjum Nisar reiterated that a Charter of Economy is the need of the hour to strengthen the economy and protect the country from any adverse economic scenario.

In fact, a strong economy is equally important to retain democracy, highlighting the relevance of economic charter as well as envisaged targets, he said.

Mian Anjum Nisar reminded that with the departure of colonial rule, many liberated nations recognised the importance of economic progress and consolidated their governance paving way for their entrance in the club of emerging markets.

“The emergence of China as a global leader in politics and economy in a few decades’ time needed to be seriously taken into account by us,” he said.

The BMP chief reminded that China managed a seamless interface between their socialist model of political governance of state with a free economy which proved to be the best suited to their traditions and present-day demands.

The political leadership of Pakistan, he said, must join hands in building up the economy as it is critically important for the sound survival of the country.

Mian Anjum Nisar said the economy of the state and welfare of its people is the joint responsibility of all the legislators who have been voted by the people into the parliament to represent the interests of all segments of the society.

BMP’s Secretary General (Federal), Ahmad Jawad said most of the problems of the country can be taken care of if there is consensus on economic reforms, policies, and continuity is not hindered by any sort of political changes.
