KARACHI: The counter-terrorism department (CTD) of Sindh police on Wednesday arrested a man on charges of funding the so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Umar bin Khalid, a reported student of an engineering university in Karachi, was arrested in connection with a terror funding case, a statement said.
According to CTD officials, further investigation was underway to arrest three accomplices.
In 2020, Khalid was arrested from the Tariq Road neighbourhood on charges of terrorism funding. However, he was later released for want of the evidence.
“Two mobile phones were recovered from his possession and sent for forensic test,” the officials said.
“Digital forensic report of the cell phones provided key evidence against the accused and his accomplices,” they added. “A case was filed against the accused after the forensic report.”
“The accused were in contact with terrorists in Syria and Pakistan and were funding the terrorist network from various sources.”
