Telenor Pakistan has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K) and SBEEC to implement Pakistan’s first smart metering solution at its Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites in AJ&K.
The initiative, announced at Telenor Pakistan’s Campus 345 in Islamabad, aims to enhance energy efficiency, ensure accurate consumption monitoring, and support data-driven decision-making. The collaboration enables both consumers and power distribution companies to track electricity usage in real time, minimizing energy wastage and ensuring precise billing.
“This pilot project, the first-ever collaboration with any DISCO, marks a significant step in the digital transformation of the energy sector,” said Awais Vohra, Chief Technical Officer of Telenor Pakistan. He commended the AJ&K government’s forward-looking approach and highlighted the project’s potential to address system inefficiencies and reduce losses impacting consumers.
Irshad Ahmed Qureshi, Secretary of the Electricity Department, AJ&K, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that it reflects a shared vision of leveraging technology for regional socio-economic uplift. “Smart metering represents a transformative approach to energy efficiency. We look forward to the successful implementation of this pilot project and its potential for scaling,” he added.
The pilot project aligns with Telenor Pakistan’s commitment to promoting digital solutions for socio-economic development. As a pioneer in technological innovation, Telenor continues to lead initiatives that drive impactful change in communities across the country.
The smart metering solution is expected to serve as a model for similar projects nationwide, advancing public-private collaboration in digitalizing Pakistan’s energy sector.
