Elon Musk has confirmed that Starlink is waiting for government approval before launching its satellite internet services in Pakistan.
On January 4, 2025, a Pakistani social media (X, formerly Twitter) user appealed to Musk, highlighting how Starlink could transform Pakistan’s digital landscape. “Starlink could connect millions to high-speed internet and unlock new economic opportunities,” the user tweeted. Musk replied directly, stating, “We are waiting for approval from the government.”
This exchange sheds light on regulatory barriers delaying Starlink’s entry into Pakistan. Discussions on Starlink have been ongoing within the Pakistani government. On December 5, 2024, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima told the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that efforts were underway to facilitate Starlink’s entry. She also noted that regulatory approvals were still pending.
During Senate meetings, officials raised concerns about potential bureaucratic delays and national security implications. While the Ministry of IT and Telecom continues to evaluate the proposal, authorities have emphasized the need to address compliance and security considerations before granting approval.
As Pakistan’s IT sector expands, Starlink’s potential to bridge the digital divide in underserved areas is significant. However, its launch timeline depends on the government’s final decision.
For now, Pakistanis interested in high-speed satellite internet must await further updates from Starlink and local authorities.
