Boeing CEO cancels Paris Airshow trip after Air India crash

Ortberg tells staff on Thursday that they would stay back to support their team, the customer, and the investigation

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and Boeing Commercial Aeroplanes chief Stephanie Pope will not attend next week’s Paris Airshow following the fatal crash of an Air India jet.

Ortberg told staff on Thursday that they would stay back to support their team, the customer, and the investigation.

More than 240 people died when an Air India Boeing 787 heading to London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on Thursday. Authorities said it was the deadliest aviation disaster in a decade.

GE Aerospace, which supplied the engines for the aircraft, also cancelled its investor day planned for June 17 during the airshow. The company said it would send a team to India to help with the investigation and would give a financial update later in the month.

The Paris Airshow, set for June 16 to June 20, is the world’s biggest aviation industry event, where airlines often place major aircraft orders. Delegates said the crash has cast a somber tone over the event, with expectations of fewer high-profile press conferences and announcements.

Some companies may delay order news as a sign of respect for the victims. GE said its leadership is focused on supporting customers and helping gather data from the accident.
