The Punjab Assembly approved more than Rs638 billion in grants for five major departments, rejecting all cut motions raised by the Opposition. The grants were presented by Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman after a five-day general discussion on the 2025-26 annual budget, with Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan presiding over the session.
The approved grants include Rs200.10 billion for the police, Rs26.53 billion for agriculture, Rs258.97 billion for health services, Rs137.53 billion for education, and Rs15.16 billion for public health.Â
The Opposition, particularly from the PTI, raised concerns about government policies and the performance of various sectors but was unable to reduce the allocations.
Opposition lawmakers criticized the police department for alleged political victimization and failure to maintain law and order, with calls for urgent police reforms. They also questioned the agriculture sector’s allocation, claiming mismanagement and lack of support for farmers. However, Agriculture Minister Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain Shah defended the budget, highlighting initiatives to support farmers and improve crop yields.
In response to criticism of the health sector, Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique outlined government efforts, including the establishment of cancer treatment facilities and new cardiology hospitals, as well as the expansion of medical clinics in underserved areas. The government also defended the public health allocation, focusing on partnerships and infrastructure improvements.
Despite opposition objections, the government successfully secured Rs137.53 billion for education, with additional support for public health. Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman concluded by emphasizing that the budget was balanced and reflected the needs of the common people.
