Pakistan to export corn to Iran, strengthening agricultural and food security ties

Iranian delegation to visit Islamabad for final arrangements within two weeks; Tehran shows interest in joint studies with Pakistan's Seed Councils on seed development and disease-resistant varieties to boost food security and agricultural innovation

The Iranian Ministry of Agriculture will dispatch a high-level delegation to Pakistan within the next two weeks to finalize arrangements for the export of Pakistani corn to Iran, state-run news agency APP reported.

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, has called on Gholamreza Nouri Ghezeljeh, Minister for Agriculture Jihad of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to advance ongoing agricultural cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to implementing decisions taken by the Joint Committee on Agricultural Cooperation and agreed to facilitate the import of agricultural products in line with understandings reached during the visit of Pakistan’s Minister for National Food Security last month.

Jam Kamal Khan also thanked the Iranian side for enhancing imports of Pakistani rice and meat.

Iran expressed keen interest in undertaking joint studies with Pakistan’s Seed Councils on seed development and the production of disease-resistant varieties, aiming to strengthen food security and agricultural innovation in both countries.

Recently, the 22nd session of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Economic Commission (JEC) concluded on a positive note, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to achieving a $10 billion bilateral trade target.

Both sides signed several protocols aimed at deepening trade and economic ties. Key outcomes included agreements to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers, enhance electricity exchanges, and promote transport links such as rail cargo, air navigation, and ferry services for passengers. Additionally, both nations agreed to strengthen collaboration in sectors like agriculture, renewable energy, healthcare, and cultural exchanges.

The JEC also discussed creating a Joint Committee on Labour Cooperation to facilitate worker mobility between the two countries, particularly in construction, textiles, and agriculture.
